South African Trip
Over the half term break, seven Year 8 pupils ventured to warmer climates looking forward to spending some time with their South African exchange families. On the way the group of children, alongside Mr Mannall and Miss Walton, stopped in Cape Town, where they were overwhelmed by the surrounding mountains. They spent five days exploring the city and all it has to offer; they took the cable car up Table Mountain and climbed the peak of Lion’s Head. They also spent the morning in a Township, gaining an idea of what life is really like for some of the poorer population; this is something that will remain with the group for a long time. The group took to the warmer Indian ocean for a surfing lesson, all managing to ride a wave, fist-pumping the air with pride as they did. The long journey to Port Elizabeth allowed for two stops; in Oudtshoorn, where the children experienced a ride on an ostrich, and Storms River, where they saw the delights of Tsitsikamma National Park. The children then experience the life of a South African living in Port Elizabeth. They enjoyed the comparatively relaxed environment of school and had their own adventures with their host family. The whole group had the experience of a lifetime, met new friends and have learnt a great deal.
