About Us

Kingshott School is set on the outskirts of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and provides an outstanding co-educational experience for children aged 4 to 13. Standing in 23 acres and surrounded by countryside, it is hard to believe that central London is only a 30 minute train journey away. Kingshott serves Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock, Stevenage, Welwyn and the villages around them, towns and villages in Bedfordshire, and South Cambridgeshire. There are 340 children who enjoy the school’s excellent facilities, dedicated teaching staff, playing fields and outdoor play areas.

With class sizes of approximately 16, all children enjoy a varied curriculum. Up until Year 5, most lessons are classroom based, after which subject teachers take over and guide senior children towards their Common Entrance examinations. Our Year 8 children’s success see them entering outstanding senior schools across the counties. Many of them receive scholarships and go on to achieve GSCE and A Level results to be proud of.

Besides the core subjects, children also enjoy opportunities to expand their experiences in Design Technology - including Food Technology and Textiles - Art, IT, Modern Foreign Languages, Swimming and Drama. Although high academic standards are demanded, a wide range of abilities necessitates a wide range of expectations. Through positive encouragement, ambitious yet realistic target setting and, not least, good teaching, children are met at their points of need and nurtured towards finding fulfilment.

Games and PE balance the curriculum and provide ample opportunity for children to enjoy the outdoors and play sport. Both team and individual sports feature throughout the year where competition flourishes with both independent and local schools. Music is in high demand with more than two thirds of the school participating in various choirs and orchestras, or taking up one of twenty individual instruments on offer.

Outside the classroom a growing programme of activities serves to entice, excite and enrich. Whether at break time or after school, children participate with great enthusiasm in these clubs and activities.

Our school development continues with the most recently opened Ashbrook building (accommodating Years 3 to 5). The Pre-Prep building opened in 2004 and provides a stunning and contemporary learning environment. There is more still to come and we look forward to continuing our improvements.

While promoting a home-school balance, we understand the demands on many families. To help in this regard, wrap around care is provided with a breakfast club available from 7.45am. Tea and Prep and after-school provision are available for families requiring supervision for their children at the end of the school day.
