Art and Design

Art is taught from years 3 to 8 by a specialist teacher. Lessons take place in a newly refurbished art room equipped with Smart board technology for internet access and a wide range of media and materials for creative work in 2D and 3D

Clay preparation techniques are taught from year 3 and work can be fired on site in the kiln. The art department has recently acquired a printing press from money raised by the Parents Association allowing the opportunity to explore printmaking techniques such as lino printing, collatype and card etching.

Projects in Art and Design lessons are often linked to a particular artist, for example, Picasso, Klimt and Klee, or may be inspired by contemporary artists and illustrators such as David McKee or Lauren Child

Cross-curricular links are made across all subjects and have included topics linked with study of rainforest habitats, imaginative compositions in conjunction with class reading books and topics inspired by historical figures and events.

In addition to their art and design lesson children in the Middle School explore topic related creative work. This has included group projects involving fabric designs for a quilt based on Islamic tile patterns and a mural in semi-relief taking inspiration from ‘The Mousehole Cat’ as well as individual drawing, painting and model-making tasks.

An art hobby group meets after school giving opportunity for work on independent projects.
