Why Do We Have A School Parents' Association?

We are very fortunate at our school to have a School Parents' Association that is and has been such an integral part of the school community for many years. In its time the Association has raised many thousands of pounds, which have been spent on improving equipment and resources to enhance our children’s education and the facilities in school in general.
But it is much, much more than just fundraising. The Association’s main goal is to organise successful social events for parents and children; providing an opportunity for people to meet and get to know each other. The School Parents' Association exists to provide closer links between home and school, and it is an excellent way to bring staff, parents and friends together socially in support of the school working towards a common goal. And it’s fun! Just ask any of the Committee or helpers. Obviously as in any organisation, there are times when it is more ‘challenging’, but with the continued support of parents and staff, our School Association has always succeeded in its efforts.

All parents and members of the school community can get involved if they want to, even if they only have a small amount of time available, and all parents are automatically members of the Kingshott Parents' Association when they join our school.

How We Raise Money

The emphasis of raising money shifted somewhat last year and our priority is to have a strong social circle within the school community. We intend to do this by concentrating on our ongoing popular social functions and also introducing some new events throughout the year.
However, we aim to gain some profit from such events to be able to provide our children with those little extras that make their time at Kingshott even more enjoyable. Some of our most popular events are the Fireworks Evening, Quiz Night, the Summer Ball and Children’s Christmas event. There is always something going on!

How we spend the money we raise

Once money is raised from events the funds are banked straight away. It is at our School Parents' Association Committee Meetings, that the decisions on how to spend the money are taken.
Usually, Mr Gilmour will have a ‘shopping list’ of items that the school would like to purchase. Sometimes this will be as a result of the children asking for something, i.e. the school play equipment. At other times it will be for resources to improve a particular area of the curriculum or school environment. In the main the School Parent Association funds are for the ‘extras’ not provided by the school, that make our children’s learning experiences so much more fulfilling and exciting.
School Parent Association funds are not generally spent on improving the fabric of the school building as this is the responsibility of the school Governing Body. The money we raise is usually spent fairly quickly. That way, you can be sure that in supporting our school, your and everybody’s child will feel the benefit.
Of course there are times when we have a big project under way that we need to save money for. The last two academic years we committed funds to provide the wooden adventure play areas you will see sited around the school. We also provided funds towards ‘Enrichment week’- a week of exciting extracurricular activities for all the children held at the end of the school year.

How Can You Get Involved?

There are lots of ways you can help and support your child through the School Parents' Association.
Offering to help before events or at other times during the year is so valuable – it really is a case of ‘many hands make light work’. It doesn’t matter if you can’t help on a regular basis, or even if you can’t come into school. There are always little jobs that can be done from home if you have half an hour to spare e.g. wrapping gifts, preparing raffle tickets etc. We really couldn’t achieve what we do without the unseen ‘band of help’ that exists in school.
You can of course, volunteer to be a Committee Member.
You can attend the AGM and give us your ideas for fundraising events – this is also the time to ask questions or voice your opinion.
You can help by letting us know if you have any contacts or skills we could use – anything is valuable to us. We have an ongoing volunteers list; please let us know if you wish to be added. There is a post box for the committee in the main reception area of the school (near Mr Gilmore’s office).
And finally, we are always extremely grateful to receive donations.
