SUBJECT NAME: ART & DESIGN

Aims of the subject:

  • To make Art fun and enjoyable for all
  • Encourage children to appreciate the visual world around them.
  • Encourage and nurture artistic confidence.
  • Develop the creative skills of all young people, regardless of their natural ability.
  • To provide all children with an opportunity to express themselves visually in an enjoyable manner
  • To stimulate the children’s capacity for imaginative and original thought and experimentation
  • To develop the children’s capacity to learn about and to observe the world in which they live
  • To encourage the children’s ability to articulate and communicate ideas, opinions and feelings about their own work and that of others
  • To develop the children’s ability to value the contribution made by artists, craftspeople and designers and to respond thoughtfully, critically and imaginatively to a variety of ideas, images and objects from other cultures.
  • To ensure all children are able to progress and develop their abilities.

Assessment methods: 

Work is reviewed and marked at the end of each project, the children also peer and self-assess their work.

Teaching techniques: 

The emphasis in the teaching of Art & Design is on practical experience and children are encouraged increasingly to take control of their own learning. The Art & Design curriculum is organised on a topic basis. Topics can be cross-curricular linked, creative activities inspired by artists and craftspeople and art from different cultures or technique-based projects.
