A very warm welcome to Mr James Rhodes

Mr Rhodes joined us on Friday last week for a day of meet and greets and planning. We are incredibly excited that he will be joining us here at Kingshott in January as Director of Music. He has sent the following message to our school community...

Following almost 10 years working in the London Prep and International school sector. My wife and I have recently moved into our first home in Hertfordshire (fortunately just pre-pandemic!) and I am very much looking forward to developing an exciting and inspiring music programme for all pupils at Kingshott, whilst also getting involved in the wider school community.

Alongside my educational career, I am a professional singer, conductor and flautist. Since graduating from The University of Sheffield (BMus Hons) and The UCL Institute of Education (PGCE), I have enjoyed developing my performing and teaching career in a wide range of musical contexts. This has led me to become a musician with very eclectic interests and as such I enjoy working within the fields of classical music, contemporary pop, folk, choral, opera, improvisation and musical theatre - whilst also being very enthusiastic about exploring unfamiliar musical genres.

I am also the Artistic Director of Horizon Voices, a professional vocal ensemble which seeks to broaden musical horizons through a programme of education workshops, outreach projects and interactive performances. As an educator, my aim is to create a nurturing and musically vibrant learning environment where pupils are able to explore, interact with and develop a lifelong engagement with a wide range of musical styles.

My other interests include exploring my love of artisanal coffee (I am currently enjoying my Grind Greenwich subscription but I am always on the lookout for recommendations!), keeping fit through running (I'll be starting training soon for the Baldock Beast half marathon in February) and improving my enthusiastic but ultimately novice interior design skills.

I am incredibly grateful to the staff of Kingshott School for the warm and enthusiastic welcome I have already received and I look forward to meeting and working with staff, pupils and parents in the New Year!
