Years 5 and 6

Building on the solid foundation of earlier years, in Years 5 and 6 we aim to further develop the children’s thirst for learning and encourage a spirit of independence.

Year 5 and 6 are based in the Ashbrook building with Year 4.

For most of the academic curriculum, children in Years 5 and 6 are taught by their class teacher. Art, drama, design and technology, computing and music are delivered by specialist teachers, as with Year 4. Specialist teaching for French, PE and games continues and the children begin their studies of Food and Nutrition. Maths is taught in three sets across the two classes from Year 4 upwards, allowing for individualised teaching and ensuring all children make maximum progress.

In Year 5 and 6, our focus is on achieving the highest possible standards in academic subjects for all our children, while ensuring that the wider curriculum is accessible to everyone. A strong emphasis is placed on pastoral care and education, helping to develop good citizens not only of Kingshott but also of the wider community.

We aim to enhance and enliven the curriculum through a variety of value-added activities. For example, we organise trips to reinforce classroom learning in subjects including history, science, geography, art and religious education. Recent visits have included The British Schools Museum, the STEM Centre, The London Central Mosque and Bletchley Park.

All subjects are further supported and enriched by a full programme of class and year group outings, trips, events and visits, aimed at bringing learning to life and providing enjoyable, stimulating experiences. Year 5 visits the Peak District for a three night residential visit and Year 6 spends a week at PGL in Dorset.

During these important transitional years at Kingshott, children are encouraged to engage in a broad spectrum of activities and are given many opportunities for personal and social growth.
