The Reception classes are located in our award winning Pre-Prep Rowan Building. The children have access to the Pre-Prep hall, music room, outdoor classroom, sports hall and our own Pre-Prep library. The Reception classrooms are bright, welcoming and have interactive whiteboards and access to laptops and iPads. Reception also have their own purpose built outdoor area and separate playground. Each class is taught by an experienced teacher and has additional support from a teaching assistant. Reception children can attend Breakfast Club, After School Care and the school holiday provision.
Kingshott Reception is one of only two schools in Hertfordshire to gain the National Quality Mark for Early Years. To achieve the Quality Mark, Kingshott had to undergo an assessment, carried out by an external accredited assessor, against the 10 ‘Elements’ of the Quality Mark for Early Years framework. These include reviewing young children’s learning needs and planning their next steps, providing safe, stimulating resources and equipment – both indoors and outdoors - and having skilled early years’ practitioners. Positive partnerships with families and effective monitoring and evaluation are also required.
Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, which recognises that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. Small class sizes ensure that every child is treated as an individual, enabling all teaching staff to pinpoint the next steps in each child's individual learning journey.
The Reception classes follow a more formal timetable than Nursery but the emphasis is still on learning through play and practical activities. Mathematics, Literacy and Phonics are taught in the mornings with other curriculum areas in the afternoons. Reception follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics programme and have a variety of reading schemes for the children to use. Reception also have drama, PE and music with specialist teachers. Children enjoy French lessons with ‘Camembear’, a favourite Pre-Prep French teddy! Optional Reception ballet lessons are held one afternoon per week.
Our Early Years Foundation Stage Profile results at the end of Reception are consistently above the national average.
