Year 4 have a successful and enjoyable Greek Day!

Year 4 had a very successful and enjoyable Greek Day! They all dressed up in wonderful costumes, showcasing everything from Goddesses to Warriors and Noblemen to Medusa!

During lessons with their form teachers, the children were introduced to some Ancient Greek Myths, which then led to the study of Greek theatre, including the masks that they wore. They also played some games that Ancient Greek children would have played. These included ‘Morra’, which is similar to ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’, and ‘Knucklebones’, which they played with counters rather than bones! Greek women used to equate skill at this game to the likelihood of them meeting the man of their dreams.

The kitchen provided the most incredible array of food at breaktime to allow the children to experience elements of the Ancient Greek diet. Staples for the Ancient Greeks were bread, wine and olives, and while they did not sample all of these things (!), the children were treated to pitta bread, tomato and feta bread, hummus and tzatziki with vegetable sticks, olives and feta cheese, with dates and yoghurt with honey to finish.

The specialist teachers also worked incredibly hard to give the children as ‘Greek’ an experience as possible. One class had DT, and Mr Wall helped them to create the most fantastic model of the Parthenon, complete with removable roof and internal details. The children who had Art spent time developing their observational drawing skills through recreating different styles of Greek columns. In IT, the children created sprites for their ‘Scratch’ projects based on mythical creatures and in PE they practised some of the skills they would have needed to take part in the Ancient Olympics.

All in all, a wonderful day was had by all!
