Year 4 learn all about digestion!

Long image size for Newsletter (23)

Year 4 have been learning about the digestive system and had a disgusting time on Monday afternoon, creating their own model.

They crushed banana and digestive biscuits in a bag, to simulate the grinding of the teeth and then added orange juice to represent the stomach acid.

Once everyone in the class had given the bag a squash and a squeeze, the mixture was poured into one leg of a pair of tights (the small intestine).

It was clear to see some of the ‘goodness’ leaking out, representing the nutrients being absorbed into the bloodstream. The excess water was then removed, like in the large intestine, although this experiment used a teatowel!

Finally, a small hole was made in the end of the tights, allowing the waste material to be passed out!
