‘We are members of one body’: visiting theatre company perform and explain An Inspector Calls
The Globe Players visited Kingshott to perform a one-hour production of the detective thriller and morality play An Inspector Calls on Friday 24th April.
This educational performance was interspersed with perceptive commentary, helping our students understand the plot, as well as the central theme of social responsibility and the historical context of the play.
At one point, Toby F in Year 8 was given the opportunity to perform the Inspector's final speech, reiterating Priestley’s moral message that being part of a caring community strengthens our relationships and improves society.
We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.
After the performance, the actors illuminated the play by fielded challenging questions posed by our students:
- Who is the Inspector and what does he represent?
- How does Priestley present gender roles in the play?
- Which character is most to blame for Eva Smith’s death?
This production was a fantastic opportunity for Years 9 and 10 to refresh their understanding of one of their set texts for GCSE Literature, and for Year 8 to be introduced to the play before it is encountered next year.
