An established Hitchin-based practice specialising in architecture, structural engineering, and interior design (worcesterlloyd.com) delivered an exceptionally valuable and engaging masterclass to Year 9 pupils. The session provided profound insights into the architectural profession, blending theoretical understanding with practical application.
Pupils participated in a highly interactive, hands-on workshop in which they explored key architectural principles. These included drawing to scale, as well as critical considerations such as access requirements, health and safety regulations, utilities infrastructure, parking provision, and the fundamentals of building structure. This holistic approach allowed pupils to appreciate the multifaceted nature of architectural design.
The project brief challenged pupils to conceptualise and design a social space for Kingshott School, suitable for hosting a Year 11 prom. Pupils were encouraged to adopt a creative theme, before developing and presenting a professional pitch to a ‘client’. This included the production of visual materials and 3D mock-ups, enabling pupils to experience authentic elements of architectural practice.
Extending beyond spatial design, pupils were also tasked with developing a comprehensive event identity. This involved designing a logo, producing promotional posters and tickets, and creating a 30-second advertisement to market their event. Such activities fostered creativity while reinforcing the importance of communication and branding within real-world projects.
The collaboration with a local professional practice brought the subject to life in a particularly meaningful way. It highlighted not only the creative aspects of architecture but also the wide-ranging responsibilities associated with the profession, including sustainability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
We are immensely grateful to Marissa Worcester for her expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment to inspiring the next generation. Her contribution provided pupils with a rich and memorable learning experience, deepening their understanding of architecture and its significance within the built environment.
