A super range of Science skills are already in action this term!

Pupils across the school at Kingshott have been enjoying delving into a range of different Science topics this term.  “Our goal is to foster curious and imaginative minds”, says Mrs Keel, Kingshott’s specialist Science teacher.  “Our broad and engaging Science curriculum, our superb facilities including our fully-equipped Science lab, and all of our specialist teaching enables us to do this with every pupil across all classes at the School.”

So far this term:

  • It’s been an exciting moment for children in Year 5 as they have been introduced to Science experiments in the lab – with them all gaining their ‘Bunsen Burner Licence’!  This is a key moment in their educational journey - when pupils can start to develop their laboratory investigative skills.
  • Pupils in Year 3 have been enjoying learning about soils and rocks, whilst Year 4 are learning about States of Matter, understanding solids, liquids, and gases and the differences between their particles.
  • Year 6 and Year 7 have also been busy in their Science lessons so far this term – studying ecology and cells respectively.  Year Sixes have really enjoyed setting ‘Longworth traps’ to investigate what we have living in our fabulous woodland area.  Pupils are incredibly lucky to have access to a brilliantly biodiverse school site, as well as all our on-site scientific facilities!
  • Year 8 pupils have been studying evolution and natural selection. They have been fascinated to compare the impact and importance of the household name synonymous with the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin, and the now lesser well known, although equally important, Alfred Wallace.

Science is a real strength at Kingshott – we build scientific knowledge right from the start - even when children join us in our Nursery and Reception classes.  This knowledge is built upon over the years, alongside the ability for our children to develop scientific skills – learning how to ask and answer questions using scientific investigations.  This was highlighted in our recent Independent Schools Inspection, when Kingshott was given the highest rating of ‘Excellent’ in all areas.  The report outlined that “Pupils’ in Year 8 demonstrate high levels of understanding in Science. They tackle complex GCSE-level material successfully.”

“We look forward to continuing to foster curious and imaginative minds during our Science lessons over the rest of this academic year,” concludes Mrs Keel, Kingshott’s specialist Science teacher.
