Category / School NewsDesigning for the Future: Year 8 Bluetooth Speaker Project
Our Year 8 students have been immersed in an ambitious Design & Technology project that perfectly captures what learning looks like at Kingshott: creative, purposeful and deeply connected.
Tasked with designing and manufacturing a fully functioning Bluetooth speaker, pupils moved from concept to completion using professional tools such as TechSoft software and laser cutters. Along the way, they explored audio design principles, researched art history for visual inspiration, and made considered choices about materials, sustainability and environmental impact.
This was not simply a making exercise. The project demanded problem-solving, iteration and resilience. Students had to test ideas, refine designs and think critically about property, materials and reuse; mirroring the real-world design process. Creative thinking sat alongside technical precision, with pupils encouraged to justify decisions and evaluate outcomes.
Importantly, this project reflects our belief that strong academic progress is built through a broad and balanced curriculum. When students are given space to think creatively, work practically and connect learning across disciplines, they develop confidence, independence and intellectual curiosity. These experiences deepen understanding rather than narrowing it.
Project-led learning such as this embodies our educational approach: ideas develop through creativity, disciplines cross-pollinate, and students learn how to think, not just what to remember.
It is this richness combining rigour with imagination that prepares young learners for an ever-changing world.
